Agriculture

In Zambia, agriculture has been identified as one of the key main drivers for economic diversification and resilience (Ministry of Development Planning, 2017). The sector is the largest employer in the informal (Indaba Agricultural Policy Research Institute, 2020) with the majority rural population depending on it for their livelihood. As such, deliberate policies have been put in place to promote agriculture and its production such as the farmers input support programme.

However, the agricultural sector has been threatened by climate change and its effects, and with the dependence of smallholder on rainfall for their irrigation, this has thus posed serious threats on the food security of the country.

Therefore, the NRSC through its remote sensing and GIS capabilities has been able to undertaken research in mapping of crops. presents an opportunity in improving the management of the agricultural sector in mapping of planted crops, quick estimation of crop production yield and crop performance/ yield forecasting system.
